Divorce is like sorting out the home of a departed loved one.

Divorce usually has a steep learning curve. Most people when ending their relationship don’t realize what’s about to happen or what they might have to go through. (See previous blog “The secret partner in your relationship” from 11/15/23.)

I think it helps to think of divorce as like sorting out the house of a departed loved one. You enter the home and go room by room - sorting, discarding, and/or tackling what you need to.

Just like homes have different sizes and different amounts of rooms, divorce is similar.

In homes there are doors to open, things hidden in closets, attics, cellars… some rooms are more packed with stuff than others; divorce is similar.

In future blogs, my goal is to give information on the different legal parts of your divorce/house- “doorways”, “rooms”, “closets”… etc.

For now, just know all divorces/houses can have the following (1) termination of the marital status, (2) property rights, (3) custody and parenting time (4) child support, (5) spousal support, and (6) attorney’s fees and costs.

It is my hope the legal information forthcoming will help people going through divorce “pack up their home”, and move on, hopefully to a new and better place, because it’s never easy to figure out what you need to take with you, what you should leave behind, or what is best to get rid of.

Help is available all along the way. Remember you’ve got options!
